Life on Mars

Whisky Mag’s contributing editor and guru on Japanese whiskies, Dave, Broom, has just come back from the Far East, and has brought some exciting news.

As of next year Mars Distillery will return to operation:

Mars, Japan’s most enigmatic – or certainly least known – distillery is the third member of the Alpine Trio which includes Hakushu and Karuizawa. Opened in 1982, its two stills haven’t produced since 2002, the sweet thick honeyed stock being eked out in single cask releases. All that is about to change with whisky distillation set to restart in February 2011. There is life on Mars after all!

It also takes the distinction of being the highest in the world, towering some several feet above Hakushu.
